How long will my order take to arrive?
Every roll is printed for you, and the timings below cover printing and delivery together.
- United Kingdom — Standard 3 to 5 working days · Express 2 to 3 working days
- France — Standard 5 to 6 working days · Express 4 to 5 working days
- United States — Standard 5 to 9 working days · Express 4 to 6 working days
- Rest of the world — Standard 5 to 9 working days · Express 4 to 6 working days
How much is delivery?
Standard delivery is free everywhere in the United Kingdom, with no minimum spend. Express delivery is available as a paid upgrade, and international shipping is calculated by destination and shown at checkout before you pay.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we ship worldwide. Choose your country at checkout and the cost and timings for your destination will be shown before you commit to the order.
Will I be able to track my order?
Yes. As soon as your order leaves us we will email you a tracking number so you can follow it to your door.
Why is it not dispatched immediately?
Because it does not exist yet. We hold no stock and print nothing in advance — your paper goes on the press after you order it, in the design and colourway you chose. The timings above account for that from the moment you place the order.
Can I have it delivered to a different address?
Yes. Enter the delivery address you would like at checkout — plenty of our orders go straight to a decorator, a site or a client rather than to the person paying for them.
Can I get it faster?
Choose Express at checkout and we will prioritise your order. If you are working to a fixed date and the timings above look tight, email us at info@claretandkey.com before you order and we will tell you honestly what is achievable.
How to order a sample
How do I order a sample?
Find the wallpaper you would like to sample and customise it to the colour you want first. Then click order a sample — there are two buttons and either will do the job, one below the wallpaper types and one below the add to basket button. You will see a preview of your design in your cart, so you can check it is exactly what you meant before you order.

What size are your samples?
A3 — considerably larger than the swatches most brands send out. A postage stamp of pattern tells you very little; at A3 you can see the repeat, the scale and how the colours sit together, which is the whole point of ordering one.
Which colourway will my sample be printed in?
Whichever one you create. Set the colours you want on the product page before ordering your sample, and that is exactly what we print — you can see it in the preview in your cart before you go any further.
Do samples cost anything?
There is a charge for samples, shown when you add one to your basket. Trade customers receive samples free of charge — if you specify wallpaper professionally, it is worth opening a trade account before you order.
How should I use my sample?
Put it on the wall rather than judging it in your hand, and leave it there for a day or two. Colour changes completely between morning light and lamplight, and against the other things in the room. It is the closest you can get to seeing the finished wall before committing to it.
Can I return a sample?
Samples are final and cannot be returned or refunded. They are printed for you in the design and colourway you selected, in the same way a full order is.
Can I have a sample in a colour I cannot see on the site?
Email info@claretandkey.com with what you are working to — a paint reference, a fabric, or simply a description — and our design team will tell you what is possible.
How much do I need?
How do I work out how much wallpaper I need?
Use the estimator on any product page. Enter the dimensions of your wall and it will tell you roughly how many rolls to order. Please treat the result as a guide rather than a final figure — it is a calculation, and it cannot see your room.
How should I measure the wall?
Measure the full width of the wall and the full height, from skirting to ceiling, and use those figures. Take the height at the tallest point if the ceiling is uneven, and measure each wall separately rather than adding them together in your head.
Do I deduct windows and doors?
No. Measure the whole wall as though the openings were not there. The paper that comes off around a window or door does the work of pattern matching and trimming elsewhere on the wall, and deducting it is the most common way people end up short.
Why is the estimator only a guide?
Because walls are rarely as square as they look, ceilings are seldom level, and no calculator can allow for the particular awkwardness of your room. Use it to get close, then check the figures on site before you order — or ask your decorator to confirm them.
Should I order a little extra?
Yes. It is always worth ordering more than the bare minimum, and ordering it at the same time. A full order prints in a single run, so every roll matches — coming back for one more roll later is never as neat a solution as it sounds.
Can you check my measurements for me?
Of course. Email your wall dimensions to info@claretandkey.com and we will give you an estimate. As with the estimator, please treat it as a guide and confirm on site before ordering.
What if I run out halfway through?
Get in touch and we will reprint for you, but it is a situation worth avoiding. The paper will be printed in a separate run from your original order, and ordering the full quantity at the outset is the only way to be certain everything came off the press together.
Pattern repeat & scale
What is a pattern repeat?
It is how often the design repeats itself down the roll. Every pattern comes back around eventually, and the repeat is the measurement of that interval — a small repeat gives you a dense, busy pattern, a large one gives a design that unfolds slowly across the wall.
Where do I find the repeat for a design?
In the design specification on the product page. It varies from design to design, so check the one you are interested in rather than assuming it carries across the collection.
Can I change the scale of a design?
No. Each design is printed at the scale it was drawn at, which is the scale you see on the product page and in your sample. Colour is where the flexibility lies — every design can be recoloured to suit your room, and that is where we would encourage you to spend your time.
Does the repeat affect how much I need?
It can. A larger repeat means more paper is trimmed away in matching one drop to the next, so a design with a generous repeat will use a little more than a tight one over the same wall. Use the estimator on the product page and order a little extra on top of the figure it gives you.
How do I know how the pattern will sit on my wall?
Order a sample and hold it up. At A3 you can see the repeat properly — how large the motifs are, how the pattern behaves against your ceiling height and your furniture, and whether it reads as bold or quiet in your particular room.
How do the drops line up?
The paper is butt-joined, so each length sits edge to edge against the last rather than overlapping, and you match the pattern as you bring each new drop up to the one beside it.
Returns
Can I return my wallpaper?
Yes, within 14 days of delivery, provided the rolls are unopened and unused. Every roll is printed for you rather than taken from a shelf, so we can only accept paper back in the condition it arrived in — once a roll has been opened it cannot be returned.
Is there a limit on how much I can return?
Up to five rolls. If you have over-ordered by more than that, get in touch before you send anything back and we will talk it through with you.
Can I cancel my order?
Orders of fewer than five rolls can be cancelled at any point before they leave us. For orders of five rolls or more, you have 24 hours from placing the order to cancel — beyond that, the print run is committed and cannot be stopped.
Who pays for return postage?
Returns are sent back at your own cost, and we would recommend a tracked service so the parcel can be followed. If your order arrived damaged or faulty, this does not apply — we cover that entirely.
Can I return samples?
Samples are final and cannot be returned or refunded. They are intended to be lived with — taped to the wall, seen in daylight and again in lamplight — before you commit to a full order.
My order arrived damaged. Is that a return?
No, and please do not send it back. Email us at info@claretandkey.com with your order number and photographs of the damage, and we will print a replacement and send it out to you.
How do I start a return?
Email info@claretandkey.com with your order number and tell us what you would like to send back. We will confirm the details and where to send it before you post anything — please do not return an order without contacting us first.
Paper type & finishes
What finishes do you offer?
Two. Traditional and Removable share a super-matte finish with a smooth surface. Heavy-Grade is matte with a fine sand texture you can feel under your hand. All three are non-woven, and all three are 48cm wide by 10m long.
Traditional
150gsm, super-matte, smooth. Paste-the-wall and butt-joined. Our classic paper, and the one most people choose for bedrooms, living rooms and anywhere the wall is looked at rather than leaned on.
Heavy-Grade
300gsm, matte, with a sand texture. Vinyl-coated non-woven, paste-the-wall and butt-joined. Twice the weight of our Traditional paper and the only one of the three that can be wiped down, which is why it goes into kitchens, hallways, bathrooms and commercial interiors.
Removable
180gsm, super-matte, smooth. Adhesive-backed non-woven, applied peel and stick, butt-joined. No paste, no soaking, and it comes down again when the room needs to change.
Why does the finish matter?
Mostly because of light. A matte surface absorbs it rather than bouncing it back, so the pattern reads clearly from across the room and there is no glare from a window or a lamp. It is the reason our papers photograph so much better than they have any right to.
What does the sand texture on Heavy-Grade feel like?
A fine, even grain — subtle rather than embossed. It gives the paper a little more depth than a flat surface, and it sits well in rooms with plaster, stone or timber already in them.
Can I have the same design in any paper type?
Yes. Every design in the collection is available in all three, in whichever colourway you choose. Select the paper type on the product page before you order.
How do I decide which is right for me?
Order a sample. It arrives at A3 in the colourway you set, printed on the same paper as a full order, so you can see the finish and feel the surface before committing to a room's worth.
Hanging traditional wallpaper
How is Claret & Key wallpaper hung?
Paste-the-wall. Both our Traditional and Heavy-Grade papers are non-woven, so the adhesive goes onto the wall and the paper is hung dry straight into it. There is no soaking, no folding and no pasting table — it is a considerably cleaner job than traditional papering, and a more forgiving one.
Where should I start?
Start from a plumb line rather than a corner. Measure a drop's width from your starting point, mark a true vertical with a level or plumb line, and hang your first length against that. Corners are almost never straight, and a first drop hung to the wall rather than to a line will throw out every drop that follows.
How much wall do I paste at a time?
One drop at a time, and a little wider than the drop itself so the edges have adhesive to sit on. Apply it evenly with a roller and hang the paper into it while it is still wet. Pasting the whole wall in one go before you start is the quickest way to find yourself hanging into adhesive that has already begun to skin over.
How do I handle corners?
Do not try to butt-join into a corner. Take the paper a fraction of an inch around it, then hang the next drop against a fresh plumb line on the new wall, overlapping that small return. It keeps every drop true even when the room is not.
How do I smooth the paper down?
Work from the centre of the drop outwards and from the top down, using a smoothing tool with light, even pressure. Take bubbles and creases towards the nearest edge as you go rather than leaving them to deal with later.
Some adhesive has got onto the front of the paper. What should I do?
Deal with it immediately, before it dries. Lift it off gently with a slightly damp white cloth — always white, as a coloured cloth can transfer dye onto the paper. Do not rub at it, and do not leave it to sort out once the wall is finished.
How do I trim the top and bottom?
Crease the paper into the ceiling line and skirting with your smoothing tool, then trim along the crease with a sharp blade. Change the blade often — a dull knife drags and tears rather than cutting, and it will show.
Should I hang it myself or use a decorator?
Either. Paste-the-wall paper is well within reach of anyone who has hung wallpaper before, and plenty of our customers do it themselves. But there is no prize for struggling — if the room is tricky, the ceilings are high, or you simply want it done perfectly first time, a decorator is money well spent.
Peel & stick
How do I hang Peel & Stick wallpaper?
Start with a plumb line rather than the corner of the room, as corners are rarely straight. Peel back the top section of the backing, line the paper up against your pencil line, and press it into place. Work down the wall a section at a time, smoothing from the centre outwards as you go, and trim at the skirting and ceiling with a sharp knife.
What surfaces can I hang it on?
Smooth painted walls only. Adhesive-backed paper needs a flat, sound surface to grip, so textured or uneven walls are not suitable, and it should not be applied over existing wallpaper. The wall must be clean, dry and free of dust before you start.
My walls have just been painted. Can I go straight on?
No. Paint needs a full 30 days to cure before Peel & Stick goes over it. Fresh paint is still hardening long after it feels dry to the touch, and applying too early is the most common reason paper fails to hold.
How do I get rid of bubbles?
Most bubbles can be smoothed out towards the nearest edge as you go, which is why it pays to work in sections rather than committing a whole drop at once. For a stubborn one that will not move, a small pierce with a pin and a gentle press will settle it flat.
How do the drops line up?
Our rolls come as a set of two, A and B, and they are hung in sequence — A first, then B, then A again across the wall. The paper is butt-joined, so the edges sit against one another rather than overlapping. Hang them in order and the pattern runs continuously across the room.
Can I take it down and put it up somewhere else?
You can, but we would not recommend it. Once a length has been removed it rarely goes back as cleanly as it went up the first time, and the finish tends to suffer. It is designed to come down when you want a change, not to be moved from room to room.
Can I use Peel & Stick in a bathroom?
No. Heat and humidity work against an adhesive backing, so we do not recommend it in bathrooms. If you want wallpaper in a bathroom, Heavy-Grade is the paper to choose.
How do I look after it once it is up?
Dust it regularly with a soft dry cloth. If you need to clean a mark, use a slightly damp white cloth and a light touch, never a scrubbing motion and never household cleaning products. This is paper and it is ink, it should be treated as such.
Trade Accounts
What is a Claret & Key trade account?
It is our account for people who specify wallpaper for a living. Every design we make is printed to order and fully customisable, so a trade account is simply the version of that service built around project work — better pricing, free samples to show your clients, and free shipping on every order.
Who can apply?
Trade accounts are open to interior designers, architects, decorators and contractors, shopfitters and other trade professionals. If your work sits slightly outside those categories, apply anyway and tell us what you do — we review every application ourselves.
What do I get with a trade account?
- 15% off every order, on any design and any colourway.
- Free samples, so you can put the real paper in front of your client before anything is committed.
- Free shipping on all trade orders.
- Full access to our customisation service — every design can be adapted in colour and scale, printed to order for your project.
How do I sign up?
Fill in the short form on our trade page. We ask for your name, your company name, the type of work you do, and an email address and phone number so we can reach you. It takes a minute, and there is nothing to pay to open an account.
How long does approval take?
One to two working days. Once your application is approved we will email you to confirm the account is open, along with everything you need to place your first order.
How do I use my trade discount?
Approved trade partners are sent a personal trade code. Enter it at checkout and your 15% is applied to the order. The code is yours to use as often as you like — there is no need to request a new one for each project.
Is there a minimum order or spend?
No. There is no minimum order, no minimum spend and no ongoing commitment. Whether you are papering a single hallway or fitting out a whole house, the account works the same way.
Can I order samples for my clients?
Yes, and they are free on a trade account. Wallpaper is difficult to judge on a screen, so we would always rather you had the paper in the room, in the light it will actually live in, before your client signs anything off.
Can you help me work out how much paper a project needs?
We can. Send us the wall dimensions and we will give you an estimate. Please treat it as a guide rather than a final figure — walls are rarely as square as the drawings suggest, so we always recommend confirming quantities on site before ordering.
Who do I speak to about a trade order?
Email is the best way to reach us, and we are happy to take an order that way once your account is open. If you would rather talk it through first, call us and we will help you plan the order before it goes in.
Custom colours
Can I change the colours of a design?
Yes — and it is the thing that sets us apart. Every design we sell can be recoloured, so rather than hunting for a paper that happens to suit your room, you take a design you love and put it in the colours your room is already wearing. Nothing arrives having been made for somebody else.
How do I choose my colours?
Use the options on the product page to see the design in different colourways before you buy. What you see is what will be printed, so take your time over it.
Will the printed colour look exactly like it does on screen?
It will be close, but no screen is a reliable guide. Every monitor renders colour differently, and a room's own light changes it again through the day. Where colour matters — and with wallpaper it always does — see it on paper before committing to a full order.
What if I want a colour that is not on the site?
Talk to us. Matching a paint reference or a fabric, working to a colour you have in your head, seeing a colourway on paper before you order — all of it is possible, and all of it is best handled by our design team rather than guessed at from a page. Email info@claretandkey.com with what you are working to and we will tell you what is achievable, what it costs and how long it takes.
Bespoke designs
Can you create a bespoke design for me?
Yes. Beyond the options you can customise yourself on each product page, we offer a bespoke service handled by our in-house design team. If you have something in mind that our collection does not quite cover, get in touch and we will talk it through with you.
What counts as bespoke?
Anything beyond the choices available on the website. That might be an existing design altered for your room, a colour taken from a fabric or a paint chart, or something drawn for you from scratch. Every design we sell was made by our own designers, so there is very little we cannot look at.
How do I start a bespoke project?
Email info@claretandkey.com and tell us what you are hoping to achieve. Photographs of the room, a fabric or paint reference, or simply a description of what you have in mind are all useful — the more we can see, the more useful our first reply will be.
What will it cost, and how long will it take?
It depends entirely on what is involved, so we will not pretend to a standard answer. Once our design team understands the project they will come back to you with the detail — cost, timings and what happens at each stage — before anything is committed.
Can I see it before it is printed?
Nothing goes to print without your say-so. Our team will work through the design with you, and you will see it before it is committed to paper.
Can I customise a design without going bespoke?
Often, yes. Many of our designs can be adjusted directly on the product page, in colour way and in design, without any need for a bespoke commission. Start there — and if what you want is not among the options, that is exactly what the bespoke service is for.
How to place an order
How do I place an order?
Order directly on our website. Choose your design, select the paper type and colourway you want, add the number of rolls you need and go through to checkout. Everything is printed once the order is placed, so take a moment over the paper type before you confirm.
Can I order by email instead?
Yes. Email us at info@claretandkey.com with what you would like and we will send you a checkout link made up for your order. It is the easiest route if your order is at all involved — several designs, a large quantity, or a colourway you want to talk through first.
Can I place an order over the phone?
No. We are always happy to talk through a design, a quantity or a colour before you commit, but we do not take payment or place orders by phone. Once we have agreed what you need we will email you a checkout link to complete it yourself.
Should I order a sample first?
We would always recommend it. Wallpaper is difficult to judge on a screen — colour shifts with the light in the room and with the time of day. Live with a sample on the wall for a day or two before committing to a full order.
How many rolls should I order?
Send us your wall dimensions and we will give you an estimate. Please treat it as a guide rather than a final figure and confirm on site before ordering, as walls are rarely as square as they look. Order everything you need in one go, including a little contingency — a full order prints in a single run, so the colour is consistent across every roll.
How do I use my trade discount?
Apply your trade code at checkout and 15% comes off the order. If you do not yet have a trade account, you can apply through our trade page — approval takes one to two working days.
What happens after I place my order?
You will receive a confirmation email straight away, and your paper goes into print. When it leaves us we will email you a tracking number so you can follow it to your door.
I have not received a confirmation email.
Check your spam and promotions folders first, as confirmations often land there. If there is nothing, email info@claretandkey.com and we will confirm the order and send it again.
Care & cleaning
How should I look after my wallpaper?
Dust it regularly with a soft dry cloth or a soft brush, and that is most of the job done. It is worth remembering what is on your wall. This is paper and it is ink, it should be treated as such. Looked after gently, it will stay looking as it did the day it went up.
Can I clean a mark off the wallpaper?
Gently, yes. Use a slightly damp white cloth, work lightly, and let the wall dry naturally. Always use white — a coloured cloth can transfer dye onto the paper and leave you with a worse mark than the one you started with. Never scrub, never soak it, and never reach for household cleaning products.
Something has splashed on the wall. What should I do?
Act quickly. Blot it straight away with a clean dry cloth, pressing rather than rubbing — rubbing spreads the mark and can lift the ink. Once you have taken the worst of it up, a light touch with a slightly damp white cloth will usually finish the job.
Can I use your wallpaper in a bathroom?
Heavy-Grade is the one we would recommend. It is vinyl-coated, which makes it far better suited to a room that sees steam and splashes. Traditional can be used in a bathroom too, with good ventilation and sensible placement away from direct water.
Is Removable wallpaper suitable for bathrooms?
No. We do not recommend our Removable paper in bathrooms — heat and humidity work against an adhesive backing, and it will not hold as it should. For a bathroom, choose Heavy-Grade.
Colour accuracy & batches
Will the printed colour match what I see on screen?
It will be close, but no screen is a reliable guide. Every monitor and phone renders colour differently, and the light in your room changes it again through the day. Order a sample and live with it on the wall before committing — it is the only way to see the colour as it will actually be.
Will all the rolls in my order match?
Yes. Your whole order prints in a single run, so every roll comes off the press together and the colour is consistent across all of them.
What if I order more of the same design later?
We can reprint your design and colourway at any time, but a later order is a separate print run and we cannot guarantee it will match your original exactly. In practice this is rarely an issue and we hear very few complaints about it — but it is not something we will promise, because it is not something we can control.
How do I avoid ending up with two batches?
Confirm your final measurements before you order, and order everything you need in one go. Check the wall dimensions on site rather than relying on the estimate alone, add a little contingency, and place it as a single order. It is the one thing that removes the question entirely.
Will my sample match the full roll?
Your sample is printed on the same paper, with the same inks, in the colourway you chose, so it is a genuine guide to what will arrive. As with any print, there can be the very slightest variation between one run and another.
I think my order has arrived in the wrong colour.
Email info@claretandkey.com with your order number and photographs, ideally taken in daylight, and we will look at it straight away. Please get in touch before hanging anything you are unsure about — it is far easier to resolve while the paper is still in the roll.
Order changes & cancellations
Can I change my order after placing it?
Often, yes, but move quickly. The same rule applies as for cancelling: orders of fewer than five rolls can be changed at any point before they leave us, and orders of five rolls or more can be changed within 24 hours of being placed. Email info@claretandkey.com with your order number and what you would like changed.
Can I cancel my order?
Orders of fewer than five rolls can be cancelled at any point before they leave us. For orders of five rolls or more, you have 24 hours from placing the order — beyond that the print run is committed and cannot be stopped.
Why is there a time limit?
Because nothing sits in a warehouse waiting to be picked. Your paper is printed for you, in the design and colourway you chose, and once it is on the press it exists only as your order. The window is simply the time before that happens.
I have ordered the wrong colourway. What should I do?
Email us straight away at info@claretandkey.com with your order number and the colourway you meant to choose. If we can catch it in time we will change it for you at no cost.
I need more rolls than I ordered. Can I add to it?
Get in touch and we will see what is possible. If your order has not yet printed we can often add to the run, which is the better outcome — everything prints together and the colour is consistent across every roll.
Can I change my delivery address?
Yes, as long as the order has not already left us. Email info@claretandkey.com with your order number and the correct address, and do it as soon as you notice — once a parcel is with the courier it is out of our hands.
How do I request a change?
Email info@claretandkey.com with your order number and what needs to change. Please do not rely on any other route — email reaches us fastest, and with printing it really is a matter of hours rather than days.
What if it is too late to change?
If your order has already printed or shipped, look at our returns policy. Unopened rolls can be returned within 14 days of delivery, up to a maximum of five rolls, with return postage at your own cost.
Where can I hang it?
Where can I hang your wallpaper?
On any sound interior wall that is clean, dry and smooth. The room matters less than the surface and the paper type — get those two right and there are very few rooms in a house our paper cannot go in.
Where is Traditional best?
Bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, nurseries, studies and hallways that see gentle use. It is our classic paper and the one most people want on the walls they look at rather than lean against. It can be used in a bathroom too, with good ventilation and away from direct water.
Where is Heavy-Grade best?
Anywhere that takes daily contact or moisture. Hallways, stairwells, kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, children's playrooms — and commercial interiors, where its durability and fire rating do the work. It is vinyl-coated, so it stands up to being wiped down in a way our other papers do not.
Where is Removable best?
Rented homes, children's rooms, and anywhere you expect to change your mind. It needs a smooth painted wall to grip, so it suits modern plaster and plasterboard rather than older uneven walls. It is the paper to choose when the wall needs to go back to how it was one day.
Can I use it in a bathroom?
Heavy-Grade, yes — it is the paper we recommend for bathrooms. Traditional can work with good ventilation and sensible placement. Removable should not be used in a bathroom at all, as heat and humidity work against an adhesive backing.
Can I use it in a kitchen?
Yes, and Heavy-Grade is the sensible choice. Keep it away from the immediate splash zone behind a hob or sink, where heat and direct water will defeat any wallpaper, and it will serve the room well.
Where should I not hang it?
- Textured or uneven walls — particularly with Removable, which needs a flat surface to hold.
- Damp or unprepared walls — deal with the cause first, then paper.
- Freshly painted walls — paint needs a full 30 days to cure before anything goes over it.
- Directly behind a hob, sink or shower — no wallpaper belongs in standing water or direct heat.
Can I hang it on something other than a wall?
Quite possibly — people use our paper on ceilings, alcoves, panelling and furniture fronts. Email info@claretandkey.com with what you have in mind and we will tell you honestly whether it will work and which paper to use.
About our wallpaper
What makes Claret & Key wallpaper different?
Every design is drawn by our own designers, and every roll is printed after you order it. Nothing is bought in, nothing sits in a warehouse, and nothing arrives having been made for somebody else. Most importantly, the colours are yours to change — you take a design you love and put it in the colours your room is already wearing.
What wallpaper types do you offer?
Three, and every design in the collection is available in all of them. The design and colourway you choose stay the same; what changes is the paper it is printed on and how it goes up.
Traditional
Our classic paper, and the right choice for most rooms. It is 150gsm non-woven with a super-matte finish and a smooth texture, hung paste-the-wall and butt-joined. Fire rated EN 15102 Class B-s1,d0 and ASTM E84 Class A.
Heavy-Grade
The hard-wearing option, at 300gsm. It is a vinyl-coated non-woven with a matte finish and a fine sand texture, which makes it both more robust underfoot of daily life and far easier to wipe down. Hung paste-the-wall and butt-joined, and the paper we recommend for hallways, kitchens, bathrooms and commercial interiors. Fire rated EN 15102 Class B-s1,d0 and ASTM E84 Class A.
Removable
Peel and stick, at 180gsm. An adhesive-backed non-woven with a super-matte finish and a smooth texture, it needs no paste and no tools beyond a knife — you peel it, place it, and take it down when the room needs to change. Suitable for smooth painted walls only. Fire rated EN 15102 Class B-s1,d0.
Which one should I choose?
Traditional for bedrooms, living rooms and anywhere that lives gently. Heavy-Grade where the wall takes daily contact, or where there is steam and splashing. Removable if you rent, or if you expect to restyle the room before long.
What size are the rolls?
Every roll is 48cm wide and 10m long, whichever paper type you choose.
Are all designs available in every colourway?
The colours are yours to set. Each design can be recoloured on its product page, so rather than choosing from a handful of fixed options you are specifying the version you actually want — and that is what gets printed.
Payment, duties & tariffs
Will I have to pay duties or import charges?
No. All duties and tariffs are paid by us before your order ships, wherever in the world it is going. There is nothing to settle with the courier, no unexpected invoice a week later, and no parcel held at customs waiting for a payment. The price you see at checkout is the price you pay.
What payment methods do you accept?
- Visa, Mastercard and American Express
- Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay
- PayPal
- Klarna in the United Kingdom, Afterpay in the United States
Which currency will I be charged in?
Your own. Prices are shown in your local currency and that is what you are charged, so there is no mental arithmetic at checkout and no surprise on your statement.
Is VAT included in the price?
Yes. Prices shown include VAT where it applies, so the figure on the product page is the figure you pay.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes. Klarna is available at checkout in the United Kingdom and Afterpay in the United States, both of which let you spread the cost. Choose it at the payment step and you will be taken through their process before your order is confirmed.
When am I charged?
At the point you place the order. Everything is printed to order, so payment is what sets your paper on the press.
Is it safe to pay on your site?
Yes. Payments are handled by Shopify's secure checkout and your card details are never stored by us or seen by anyone here.
Do trade customers pay the same way?
Yes, with the same payment methods and the same prepaid duties. Apply your trade code at checkout and your 15% comes off before you pay.
Preparing your walls
What condition do my walls need to be in?
Clean, dry, smooth and completely free of dust. Fill any holes or cracks, sand them back flat, and wipe the surface down so nothing is left for the adhesive to sit on top of. Dust is the most common reason a paper fails to grip properly, and it is the easiest thing to put right.
My walls have just been painted. Can I paper over them?
Not straight away. Paint needs a full 30 days to cure before wallpaper goes over it. It may feel dry within hours, but it is still hardening underneath, and papering too early risks the paper lifting away along with the paint. If your walls are newly painted, note the date and give them the month.
What if the wall is a dark or bold colour?
Paint it out first. Strong colours can shadow through a lighter design, particularly along the seams, and no amount of care in the hanging will hide it. A neutral base coat solves it — and remember it needs the same 30 days to cure before you start.
Can I hang over existing wallpaper?
Sometimes, but we would rather you stripped it. It can be done if the existing paper is flat, smooth, non-vinyl and firmly stuck down across the whole wall. Anything less and you are building on a surface you cannot rely on.
When should I definitely not paper over the old paper?
Strip it back to the wall if any of the following apply:
- Vinyl or coated paper — adhesive will not bond to a plastic surface.
- Textured or embossed paper — the texture will telegraph through and spoil the finish.
- Dark or bold patterns — the colour underneath will shadow through a lighter design.
- Anything peeling or bubbling — the weight of the wet adhesive and new paper will pull the old layer off the wall.
There is also a risk worth understanding: moisture from the adhesive can reactivate the old glue underneath, and when that happens both layers bubble, blister or come away together.
What about new plaster?
New plaster must be fully dry before anything goes on it, and it should be painted rather than papered directly. Once it is painted, the same 30 day rule applies before the wallpaper goes up.
Is wall preparation different for Removable wallpaper?
The principles are the same, but the surface matters more. Adhesive-backed paper needs something smooth to grip, so it is not suitable for textured or heavily uneven walls, and the 30 day paint curing rule still stands.
Missing damaged on arrival
My order has arrived damaged. What should I do?
Email us at info@claretandkey.com with your order number and a few photos of the damage, and we will get a replacement printed and sent out to you. There is nothing to pay and nothing to return — your paper was printed for you, and we will simply print it again.
Part of my order is missing. Who do I contact?
Get in touch at info@claretandkey.com with your order number and tell us what has not arrived. Larger orders occasionally travel in more than one parcel and land a day or so apart, so it is worth a quick check before you write to us — but if anything is genuinely missing, we will send it out.
How long do I have to report it?
Fourteen days from delivery. Please open your parcel and check the rolls over as soon as it arrives rather than leaving it boxed until the decorator is booked — the sooner we know, the sooner we can have replacement paper on its way to you.
What do you need from me?
- Your order number.
- Photographs of the damage, clear enough for us to see the extent of it.
That is all. We do not ask you to send anything back before we act on it.
Do I need to return the damaged rolls?
No. Once we have seen the photographs we will print your replacement and send it out. Please keep hold of the damaged paper until we have confirmed everything is resolved, and then it is yours to dispose of.
I have already hung it and then noticed a fault. Can you still help?
Get in touch and we will look at it. We would always ask you to check every roll before hanging, as a fault is far easier to put right before it is on the wall than after — but tell us what has happened and we will see what we can do.
How do I get in touch?
Email info@claretandkey.com, or use the form on our contact page. Include your order number and we will pick it up from there.
Fire rating & certifications
Are Claret & Key wallpapers fire rated?
Yes. Every wallpaper we print carries a fire rating of EN 15102 Class B-s1,d0 — the classification used for decorative wallcoverings across the UK and Europe. In plain terms, B-s1,d0 means very limited contribution to fire, almost no smoke, and no flaming droplets.
What is the fire rating for each wallpaper type?
Traditional — EN 15102 Class B-s1,d0 · ASTM E84 Class A
Heavy-Grade — EN 15102 Class B-s1,d0 · ASTM E84 Class A
Removable — EN 15102 Class B-s1,d0
What does Class B-s1,d0 actually mean?
It is a reaction-to-fire classification, and it is read in three parts. B is the material's contribution to a fire, on a scale where A is non-combustible. s1 is the smoke rating, and s1 is the lowest — very little smoke. d0 means the material produces no flaming droplets or particles. Together it is the standard specifiers look for in hallways, stairwells and commercial interiors.
Is the rating good enough for commercial or contract projects?
Class B-s1,d0 is the level most commercial specifications call for, and it is why our papers are used in hotels, offices and hospitality interiors as well as homes. Requirements do vary by building and by use class, so if you are working to a specific spec, send it over before you order and we will confirm whether our paper meets it.
Do you hold ASTM E84 certification for the US?
Traditional and Heavy-Grade are rated ASTM E84 Class A, the highest flame-spread and smoke-development class under the American standard. Removable is certified to EN 15102 Class B-s1,d0.
What paper do you print on, and is it certified?
We print only on FSC and PEFC certified paper, from forests managed to a recognised standard. Every roll is printed to order, which means we do not print anything that is not going on a wall — the simplest way we know of to keep waste out of the process.
Sustainability & materials
What makes your wallpaper a more sustainable choice?
We print nothing in advance. Every roll is made after somebody orders it, in the design and colourway they chose, which means no warehouse of unsold paper and nothing produced that ends up written off. Most waste in this industry happens long before a customer is involved — we have simply taken that step out.
What paper do you print on?
FSC and PEFC certified paper, and nothing else. Both schemes certify that the pulp comes from responsibly managed forests, and we do not make exceptions to it for a cheaper roll.
What is your wallpaper made from?
All three of our papers are non-woven — a blend of natural and synthetic fibres that is more dimensionally stable than traditional paper, which is why it can be hung dry against a pasted wall without stretching or shrinking. Heavy-Grade carries a vinyl coating for durability; Traditional and Removable do not.
Is it VOC-free?
Yes. Our wallpaper is free of the volatile organic compounds that can affect indoor air quality — which matters most in the rooms people spend the longest in, bedrooms and nurseries above all.
Does made to order mean I wait longer?
A little, and we think it is worth it. Nothing is sitting on a shelf waiting to be picked, so your paper goes on the press after you order. That is the trade: a few days of patience against a business that does not overproduce.
How can I avoid wasting paper on my project?
Order the right quantity once. Use the estimator on the product page, confirm the figures on site, and order everything you need — including a little contingency — in a single order. It prints in one run, the colour is consistent, and you avoid both a shortfall and a pile of unused rolls.
Why does customisation matter for sustainability?
The most sustainable roll of wallpaper is the one nobody needs to replace. Trend-led paper is bought quickly and stripped just as quickly. We would rather you chose a design once, in a colourway that was yours from the start, and left it on the wall.
Nurseries & children's rooms
Is your wallpaper safe for a nursery?
A nursery is a room your baby breathes in day and night, so materials matter more here than anywhere. All our wallpaper is FSC-approved and VOC-free, free from the volatile compounds that can affect air quality. It is also rated EN 15102 Class B-s1,d0 for fire, the standard specified for commercial interiors.
Which paper should I choose for a child's room?
It depends on the room and the age of the child. For a nursery, Traditional is usually right — the walls see little more than a cot against them. For a playroom or an older child's bedroom, Heavy-Grade is the more sensible choice: it is vinyl-coated, which makes it both hard-wearing and far more wipeable. Removable is the one to consider if you expect to restyle before long.
Will it survive sticky hands and felt tips?
Heavy-Grade will take the most. The vinyl coating means it can be wiped down where our other papers cannot, which is why we point most parents towards it for a room in daily use. Whichever paper you choose, deal with a mark quickly — blot it with a dry cloth rather than rubbing, then a light touch with a slightly damp white cloth. This is paper and it is ink, it should be treated as such.
Can I match the wallpaper to the rest of the nursery?
Yes, and this is where most parents start. Every design can be recoloured, so you can take a pattern you love and put it in the exact colours of the room you are building — the cot, the curtains, the paint you have already chosen. Nothing needs to be compromised to fit what happens to be in stock.
What if they grow out of it?
Children's tastes move faster than wallpaper usually does, which is precisely why our Removable paper exists. It goes up without paste and comes down when the room needs to become something else — useful for a nursery that will be a bedroom before you know it.
Can I use Peel & Stick in a child's room?
Yes, provided the walls are smooth and painted, and the paint has had a full 30 days to cure. It is not suitable for textured or uneven walls, as the adhesive backing needs a flat surface to hold properly.
Your account & order history
What can I do in my account?
Your account holds your order history, your saved addresses and the details of everything you have bought from us. It is the quickest way to look back at a design and colourway you chose previously, or to check where an order has got to.
How do I sign in?
Use the account link in the footer of any page and follow the prompts on screen. If you have ordered from us before, sign in with the same email address you used at checkout and your order history will be there waiting.
I cannot sign in. What should I do?
Check you are using the email address the order was placed under, as it is usually a second address that causes the confusion. If it still will not let you in, email us at info@claretandkey.com and we will sort it out for you.
Where do I find my order history?
Sign in and your past orders are listed in your account, most recent first. Each one shows what you ordered, the design and colourway, and the address it was sent to.
I want to order more of a design I bought before. How do I find it?
Look the order up in your account and send us the order number at info@claretandkey.com. We will reprint the same design in the same colourway. Worth knowing for next time: a full order prints in one run, so ordering everything you need at once — including a little contingency — will always give you the most consistent result.
How do I update my address or details?
Sign in and edit them in your account. If an order has already been placed and the address is wrong, do not wait — email us straight away at info@claretandkey.com and we will change it if the order has not yet left us.
I have not received my order confirmation email.
Check your spam and promotions folders first, as confirmation emails often land there. If there is nothing, get in touch and we will confirm the order and resend it.
I have a trade account. Do I use the same login?
Yes. Your trade status sits with your account, so sign in with the same details as always and apply your trade code at checkout to take your 15% off.
Commercial & contract projects
Do you take on commercial and contract projects?
Yes. Alongside private homes, our paper hangs in hotels, offices and hospitality interiors. Every roll is printed to order, so scale is not a limitation — a single feature wall and a full floor of guest rooms go through the same process.
Is your wallpaper suitable for a commercial specification?
Our papers are rated EN 15102 Class B-s1,d0, the level most commercial specifications call for. For high-traffic areas — corridors, lobbies, back-of-house — we would point you towards Heavy-Grade, which is vinyl-coated and built to take daily contact.
Can a design be adapted to suit our scheme?
Yes, and this is the part most contract clients use us for. Every design in our collection can be recoloured to your palette, and the scale adjusted to suit the room. You are not choosing from what happens to be in stock — you are specifying a paper that is printed for your project and nobody else's.
How is pricing handled on larger projects?
Trade partners receive 15% off every order, whatever the size. On larger schemes it is worth calling us to talk it through before you order, and we will put together a quote against the full specification.
What are your lead times on a contract order?
Every order is printed for you rather than picked off a shelf, and we ship worldwide, so timings depend on the size of the run and where it is going. Tell us your dates when you enquire and we will confirm exactly what is achievable before anything is committed. The earlier in the programme we hear from you, the more room we have to work with.
Will the colour be consistent across the whole job?
Yes, provided the full quantity is ordered together. The entire order prints in one run, so every roll comes off the press identically. It is the single most useful thing you can do for a large project — order the whole job at once, including your contingency, rather than topping up later.
Can you help us calculate quantities?
Send us the wall dimensions and we will give you an estimate. Please treat it as a guide rather than a final figure, and confirm on site before ordering — walls are rarely as square as the drawings suggest.
How do we get started?
Open a trade account through our trade page, or email us with the project details and we will take it from there. If you have a specification, drawings or a palette to work to, send them across — the earlier we see them, the more we can do with them.
Tools & what you'll need
What do I need to hang it?
Not much, and nothing specialist. A ready-mixed paste-the-wall adhesive, a roller to get it on the wall, and a sharp pair of scissors or a knife for trimming. Beyond that it is the standard decorating kit — tape measure, spirit level, a smoothing tool and a step ladder.
Is any of this supplied with my order?
No. We send the wallpaper only, so the adhesive and tools are yours to sort out beforehand. None of it is specialist — any decorating merchant or DIY store will have everything on the list — but it is worth having it in the house before your paper arrives.
What adhesive do I need?
A ready-mixed wallpaper adhesive suitable for non-woven, paste-the-wall papers. That is what both our Traditional and Heavy-Grade papers are hung with, and a ready-mixed tub is the simplest option — no measuring, no mixing, no waiting for it to stand.
Do I need adhesive for Removable wallpaper?
No. Our Removable paper is adhesive-backed — you peel it and place it, with nothing to paste and nothing to buy alongside it.
Do I paste the wall or the paper?
The wall. Our papers are non-woven, so the adhesive goes straight onto the wall and the paper is hung dry into it. There is no soaking time and no pasting table, which makes it a far more forgiving job than traditional papering.
How much adhesive will I need?
Coverage varies between products, so follow the instructions on the tub rather than a general rule. As a rough principle, buy a little more than you think you need — running out halfway up a wall is the one interruption you want to avoid.
What should the wall be like before I start?
Clean, dry, sound and smooth. Fill and sand any damage, and give fresh plaster time to dry fully before papering. One thing worth flagging: our Removable paper needs a smooth surface to grip properly, so it is not suitable for textured or heavily uneven walls.
